Create a digital business card

From your first card to your next hello.

A useful digital business card answers three questions: who are you, what do you do, and how should someone get in touch? This guide walks through creating a Relay card and sharing the right details for your next introduction.

1. Decide who the card is for

Start with the context. A card for clients might include your job title, company, work email and portfolio. A personal card might share another email or messaging channel. A side project can have its own name, website and contact methods.

Relay includes two free cards, so you can begin with separate contexts. Give each card a label you recognise. That label is private and helps you choose the right card when sharing.

2. Choose a design and make it yours

Open the Relay homepage and choose Create your free card. Enter your name, role and company or project, then choose a card style. You can add a photo when you want your card to include one.

Create an account or sign in to keep the card. It is saved as a private draft, so you can finish the details before publishing. All card designs are included on the Free plan.

3. Add the contact details you want to share

In the editor, add your email, phone number, website or supported social and messaging channels. Use the contact method you would like someone to choose after meeting you.

You can hide fields you do not want to publish. Review the visitor preview to see which details will appear. Your account email does not automatically become a public card field.

  • Use a name people will recognise.
  • Choose a role or short description that explains what you do.
  • Include a direct contact method and a relevant website or profile.
  • Keep personal details off a work card unless you want to share them.

4. Choose how people can reply

Enable replies if you want to receive the other person’s details. In Replies, choose the contact channels you accept and only make a field required when you need it.

Visitors review their details and agree before sending. Their reply is saved in your private Connections. They do not need a Relay account to reply in their browser.

5. Publish and share your card

Save your card as live to make its public link available. Share that link in a message or email signature, show the QR code in person, or save the QR image for printed materials.

Anyone with a published link can open it or forward it. Check the visible details before you share. In the Relay iPhone app, a published card’s options also include Add to Apple Wallet.

6. Keep the details and the conversation current

Edit the same card when your role or contact information changes. Its public link stays the same. People opening it later see the updated card, but a contact previously saved to their address book does not update automatically.

Open Connections to add a private note or tag after an introduction. A reminder of where you met or what you discussed can make your next message more useful. Unpublish a card to stop access; delete it only when you want to retire its link permanently.

Questions before you start?

Do I need to pay to create my first card?

No. Relay’s Free plan includes two cards, all designs, QR and link sharing, replies, connections, notes and tags.

Will my card be public while I am editing it?

A new card starts as a private draft. Publish it when you are ready. A published card can be opened by anyone with its link.

Where can I get help with my card?

Relay’s Help page explains creating cards, sharing, saving contacts, replies and account controls. You can contact support if you need more help.
